PENSON’s Pick

PENSON's Playlist | Music For The New Week

By Rosie Furlong

PENSON HQ works to a soundtrack narrated solely by the team. Much like ourselves, it’s an eclectic mix ruled by the knowledge that anything goes!

With more and more offices opting into open plan, co-working space, sound systems are an essential to achieving exactly the right vibe. PENSON HQ is rigged up with a SONOS system, which allows all PENSONites to control what we hear, and just how loud we hear it… perfect for allowing everyone to work in an environment that suits them best!

Come Christmas, we had varying degrees of your traditional tunes, interspersed with pan pipe renditions of all the classics… An interesting choice you might note, and you’d be correct – it definitely divided opinions, but was nonetheless a staple part of our working soundtrack!

Day to day, our playlist follows the rise and fall of the week – Friday is for funk (turned up a notch!), Monday for ‘sooper chilled’, and the in-between days become a blur of Stevie Wonder, Solange Knowles, and KYGO…

Supposedly, there’s a science to what you should listen to at work – and with the analysis comes suggested playlists – some of which we’ve had a look at and put our own PENSON spin on…

Classical Music:

According to studies, listening to Mozart each day can lead to an increase in productivity… but to prevent running the risk of the office playlist becoming a classical snooze, try this oomphed up version…

Video Game Soundtracks:

This isn’t as bizarre as you’d first think – video games often require some serious focusing, and the soundtracks strategically help with this! The same is also found in movie soundtracks; the music is highly emotive, and our own emotions naturally mirror the music… just try not to get distracted playing ‘name that film’…

Nature Sounds:

Listening to the sweet sounds of nature is linked to an increase in satisfaction, and an enhanced ability to concentrate… so we say bring the outside in, and reminisce those relaxing hazy summer days…

Pump Up Songs:

Many of us have our own personal ‘hype song’ – from cheesy 80’s power ballads to the hot hits in the charts that we love to hate! Studies show that listening to empowering music creates a powerful state of mind… exactly what you need to get over hump day…

Feel Good Songs:

This doesn’t even need explaining – it’s a classic Friday mood playlist that ends your week on a high, or can be slipped on when the office is in need of a mid-week pick me up – here’s a glimpse into the PENSON music maestros at work giving us our Friday feels…

Instrumental Songs:

While we’re all for a quick sing along when your favourite song comes on, there are also the moments where you realise you’ve typed out the last two lines of Beyoncé’s latest song into the document you’re writing… and in these moments, it’s time to switch to instrumental songs…

As our plethora of playlists comes to an end, despite all the science and studies, the music people work to will always be just as unique as the people working to it…
